Starting as a probie can feel like drinking from a firehose—there’s a lot coming at you, fast. The goal isn’t to know everything right away. It’s to build solid habits, stay curious, and show up ready to learn.

These principles are here to help you focus on what actually matters: learning the job, earning trust, and building confidence one shift at a time.

1. Learn by Doing

Get hands-on whenever possible:

  • Handle equipment

  • Practice skills

  • Walk through scenarios

2. Be Consistent

Small, steady effort adds up:

  • 15–30 minutes of review regularly

  • Repetition builds confidence

3. Teach It Back

If you can explain it, you understand it.

  • Talk through skills

  • Review with another probie

4. Break It Down

Focus on:

  • One tool

  • One skill

  • One concept at a time

5. Ask Thoughtful Questions

Try:

“What should I focus on first with this?”
“What do new probies usually miss here?”

6. Learn the “Why”

Understanding why things are done helps you:

  • Remember better

  • Make good decisions

  • Adapt under pressure

7. Pay Attention to Patterns

Watch your crew:

  • How they move

  • What they prioritize

  • How they communicate

There’s a lot to learn just by observing.

8. Take Care of Yourself

  • Get rest when you can

  • Stay physically ready

  • Talk through things when needed

You perform better when you’re taking care of yourself.
